Encryption

A way of coding information (data) so that an authorised user or computer with the appropriate key code can decode it.

 

Ransomware

A type of malicious software that blocks access to a certain files or your entire computer and many demand that you pay money to regain access.

Hacked

This is when you’ve been targeted by cyber criminals who use vulnerabilities and other sophisticated tools to exploit you and gain access to your devices. This could leave you open to vicious malware and ransomware attacks.

 

Malware 

Malicious software, including dangerous viruses, designed to cause damage to computers, devices and other systems.

Key logging Software

A malicious program that is able to record the keys you press on a keyboard to steal sensitive data like passwords and bank details. Bitdefender ‘SafePay’ includes a virtual keyboard so that your standard key board is not used.

 

Virus

Ad Blocker

Software that stops online advertising being displayed when your browsing the internet.

 

Authorised push payment (APP) Scam 

A scam where you are tricked into sending money to a fraudster by bank transfer. There are increasing occurrences on this.

 

Domain Name

The address of a website that allows users to find it easily and can end in .co.uk, .com, .gov, .net, .sch.uk etc.

 

One Time Passcode (OTP)

This is a unique password that is only valid for one login session or transaction to help prevent fraud.

Adware

Unwanted software on your computer that displays advertising you wouldn’t otherwise see.

 

Browsing Data

This is stored information on your computer or mobile device about website pages you have visited.

 

Encrypt

This is when you or your computer converts data into code so it can’t be accessed easily.

 

Two Factor Authentication

or ‘2FA’, is an extra layer of protection for online accounts, such as a code sent to an app or mobile phone. It is advisable that you always use 2FA if available.

Android

The operating System that runs on most non-apple smart phones and tablets such as Samsung galaxy devices.

 

Data Breach

A breach of security leading to the unintended (or lawful) destruction, loss, alteration, of personal data.

 

Impersonation scam

A scam where criminal poses as a trusted organisation to steal your money or personal data.

 

Web Browser

The software you use to access and view websites such as Microsoft edge, Safari and Google Chrome.

App

Short for application. A small programme for your phone, tablet or computer that you install to perform specific tasks.

 

Digital Wallet

A program for making payments electronically such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. It can also be an electrical device.

 

Number Spoofing

When a fraudster displays a false name or number when they call or text to make you think it’s an organisation you trust.
